Abstract
Fiction is interpretation and story of life, and its subjects are problems of human or human affairs. The purpose of reading a story reflecting human and life is not to get certain information but to have aesthetic experience and strong impression.
Subjects of fiction are different from the concept of traditional information. Accordingly, subjects have to be accessed on a different level from non-literature. However, subject access to fiction has been limited to formal elements such as subject matter, a name of a character, and a name of a place in work. These denotative subject elements are no more than fragmentary information as individual concepts, so they do not meet users' demand for subject. Based on the critical mind about the problem, this study paid attention to symbol and motif as subject access point, which are implicit subject elements.
This study was progressed as the following: First, theoretical consideration was conducted on concept and characteristics of subjects and the essence of reading fiction. Second, the reason why subject access to fiction was neglected was reviewed from the historical perspective. Third, the meaning and limits of the existing subject access scheme were discussed. Fourth, concepts of symbol and motif and their possibility to be used as subject access point were considered to enhance a subject access scheme. Fifth, schemes of symbol and motif were composed respectively, which would function as subject access point. In case of symbolic subject headings, the tenor and vehicle were extracted from a dictionary of symbols to construct a list of the tenor versus the vehicle which will be used by indexers. Next, the tenor in the list was analyzed and the tenor scheme necessary for subject access of users was composed using a technique of inductive categorization. In case of motif subject headings, a dictionary of the relevant terms was used as source of information. Then, the motif scheme was made by categorizing them focusing on components of fiction so that it is used easily in indexing and searching. The composed schemes of symbol and motif were applied to Korean fiction and its usability and limitations were discussed.
The meanings of symbol and motif scheme as means of subject access to fiction are as follows: First, the symbol scheme enables to access subject by viewpoints. The top 7 categories of the symbol scheme of the tenor are regarded as a viewpoint of interpreting symbols. In particular, categories including 'emotions', 'in-depth psychology' and 'ideas based on the actual' seem to be useful in psychological and sociological access to subject of fiction. Second, the list of the vehicle versus the tenor of symbols can be used as a basis for subject analysis. Since this list suggests a number of possible controlled vocabulary of the tenor corresponding to a vehicle, indexer can contrive convenience using the list as a supplementary tool in the process of subject analysis. Third, motif can function as a tool of subject access to all artistic works with narrativity. Using one common motif, it is possible to access works of various genres, compare and analyze them.
As an experimental study, this study concentrated on setting up a category accepting subject headings. The massive task of accepting possible subject headings to the utmost seems to be a main assignment of future study.
